Lines of type, made by a Linotype machine, and ready to be used in printing. The text is actually a list of people’s names, if you were wondering. The lines going vertically in each line are the result of “space bands” used to even out the widths of the lines. Note, too, that to make the lines properly spaced apart one might insert thin strips of metal (usually lead) between them, hence the term leading for the act of spacing out the lines.
