Title: UK holiday 05: Wigan Pier
Total items: 53
Clyde and I stayed with my sister Ruth, her husband Bob and their dog Daisy, in Wigan, and he next day went to see Wigan Pier.
Wigan Pier was made famous by the music-hall singer George Formby, as well as by the writer George Orwell. The trick is that when people hear “pier” they think of a seaside holiday resort, but Wigan is inland, far from the sea. The pier is actually a place for loading coal onto canal boats.
Today there’s a tourist centre with a “Way We Were” museum (with live actors), a jazz club, and a lot to see.
