An ancient Roman sarcophagus, or stone coffin if you will, from the third century, some 1800 years ago. Rectangular sarcophagus (beginning of 3rd century a.d.) with undulating fluting in the center. Door to the underworld decorated by winged genii representing the seasons. On the sides male figure on the right and female figure on the left. On one flank two gryphons facing each other, on the other flank pegasus over a basin. |
