Description: The dominant angularity and horizontality in this drawing, despite appearing disarmingly simple at first glance, create in the mind images steeped in insight and emotive power... The figured background belies a division of space that parallels the divisions and interstices of the mind. Of a sudden, we see the diagonal axis for the inner ego curve back and forth, suggesting inconstancy. In post-impressionistic art, the visual phenomena of the external world are, in themselves, unimportant: the important thing is feeling, as such.

``Paradoxically, this work, which has such an assertive and fascinating physical presence, simultaneously undermines its physical reality by the way in which it reflects, and thus elides or blends with, its surroundings.''
