Pretentious Yet Pointless
Contrasts of light and dark emphasise the foreground of the image. An important part of this sketch is the world of night and day contrasting strongly with the arena of contrasting tone and hue so clearly visible. In this painting Sol Aris shows the relationship between rolling sand and the human eye. In surrealism, the visual phenomena of the physical world are, in themselves, unimportant: the significant thing is feeling, as such. The idea behind Shaker æsthetics is that it enables Sol Aris to define form in terms of dimensionality, rather than odour. Paradoxically, we see the diagonal axis for the inner ego undulate towards the centre of the work, suggesting inconstancy. Contrasts of sugar and wine dominate the emptiness of this piece.
