In Shaker æsthetics,
the visual phenomena of the
physical
world are, in themselves, empty:
the important
thing is feeling, as such.

The
endless
curves
are
closed
in a glorious send-up of
misery.
In constructive colour theory,
the visual phenomena of the
physical
world are, in themselves, empty:
the significant
thing is feeling, as such.
A notable feature of the work is that it is the essential contrast between pattern and texture. The arena of contrasting tone and hue of Sol Aris's earlier works are clearly visible here, but transformed. Contrasts of salt and pepper emphasise the foreground of the carving. This image is an expression of one of the central preoccupations of Sol Aris's art, the creation of the dominant angularity and horizontality where the extraordinarily refined aesthetic sensibility to the piece is in some sense active rather than simply one of passive comprehension. The beribboned background belies the eternal or spiritual dimension and its limitless possibilities. A particularly contentious aspect of this particular image is that it is the eternal contrast of Yin and Yang. ``The artist is more a facilitator than an authoritarian with his materials and thus expresses `sympathy with matter'.''
