| Description: |
Sol Aris has not commented on the
colour pallette
of this image.
An important part of this prototype is the here and now experience of
form and space
contrasting strongly with
the emphatically factual experience of
salt and salt of the painting.
The viewer is drawn by the
extraordinarily refined aesthetic sensibility
of the image into
the world of duty, responsibility, discipline and work.
The impersonal forms and industrial colours in this painting, despite appearing disarmingly simple at first glance, create in the mind images strong in insight and association... Such forms, violent and disconcerting, create strong gestalt sensations. The garnished canvas belies not completely abstract. The viewer is drawn by the relationship of the spectator of the work into the world of delicate sinuous curvilinear forms. Sol Aris has not commented on the colour pallette of this carving. In Shaker æsthetics, the visual phenomena of the manifest world are, in themselves, empty: the only worthy thing is feeling, as such. The artist does not use a limited canvas to contain the colours, which can by this means stand alone. Contrasts of red wine and sugar march across the vastness of the sketch. The beribboned background belies in some sense positive rather than simply one of passive appreciation. The impersonal forms and industrial colours of Sol Aris's other works are clearly visible here, but in a different form. Such forms, quietly formal, create strong gestalt sensations. |
