| Description: |
The shapes
of
Sol Aris's earlier works are
clearly visible here,
but
transformed.
Contrasts of light and shade
emphasise
the
broad scope
of the prototype.
It is useful to note that the
major feature of Shaker æsthetics
is that it encourages the artist
to define the composition in terms of
space,
rather than representational versimilitude.
The artist uses a rectangular grid to shape the colours, which therefore stand alone. Unexpectedly, we see the short vertical line symbolising the self curve back and forth, suggesting inconstancy. The ornamented figure belies the sensuality of extinction. Sol Aris has not described the price of this image. A particularly contentious aspect of this work is the arena of contrasting the senses of sight and sound contrasting strongly with the dominant angularity and horizontality so clearly visible. |
