Pretentious Yet Pointless
The shapes in this image, despite appearing disarmingly simple at first glance, create in the mind single-axis asymmetric soft, closed signs with inner and outer crossings... Contrasts of night and day emphasise the vastness of the doodle. The picture shares not only Sol Aris's death-identification but also his cosmic perspective and obsession with power. Contrasts of dark and light emphasise the foreground of this sculpture. Paradoxically, we see the short vertical line for power and authority undulate towards the centre of the picture, suggesting unreliability. Such forms, quietly formal, create disarmingly intenste feelings.
The figured ground enriches not completely concrete. The dominant angularity and horizontality of Sol Aris's previous works are still present, but transformed.
