This item is an Ancient Egyptian statue; the caption reads as follows:

Sandstone Column-Statue of the God Arenenuphis, Protector of Temples

Nubian; 1st Century AD, excavated at Meroe (in modern Sudan) by Dr John Garstang in 1909 – 10
A.1910.110.36

Over-life-size statues of gods were placed in pairs at the entrances to temples. Only five pairs survive. This example is the only one in Britain; its partner is in Copenhagen. The statue, which was originally painted, once formed the front of an architectural column. It was dismantled in antiquity to be replaced by a later column, and has been specially reconstructed for display here.
